Thailand eSIM brief

The 60-second version · refreshed daily · 2026-07-02

Thailand's mobile market is effectively a duopoly between AIS and True, both with strong city and island coverage, and a travel eSIM spares you the new in-person passport-and-biometric registration that now applies to local SIMs. Bangkok has near-saturation 5G; beaches and ferries mostly run on solid 4G. A good fit for island-hoppers who want maps, Grab and chat apps live without queuing at an airport counter.

Three things to know

  1. Thai networks cover the major islands well; remote beaches and ferry crossings can drop to 4G or weaker, where AIS-based coverage tends to hold up best.
  2. Local SIMs now require in-person passport and biometric registration — travel eSIMs are roaming-based and skip that entirely.
  3. Thailand is outside the EU roaming zone, so a 'Europe' regional plan won't work; choose a Thailand or Asia-regional eSIM.
  4. Many 'unlimited' Thailand plans give a daily high-speed allowance (often a few GB) then throttle — fine for maps and chat, worth checking if you stream or hotspot.
