Türkiye eSIM brief
Türkiye is not part of the EU roaming zone, so EU-regional plans don't cover it — you need a Türkiye-specific or global eSIM. Coverage is excellent across Istanbul and the western tourist belt and thins out toward the east, where Turkcell reaches furthest. The key tip: buy and activate before you arrive, because Turkey's regulator has blocked many eSIM providers' sites from within the country.

Three things to know
- Türkiye is NOT covered by EU-regional plans — you need a Türkiye or global plan.
- Buy and fully activate your eSIM before arriving: Turkey's regulator has blocked many international eSIM providers' websites and apps from inside the country.
- Istanbul and the coastal/western regions have excellent coverage; eastern Anatolia thins out, where Turkcell-based plans reach furthest. Treat the country as strong-4G — commercial 5G only began rolling out in 2026 and is urban-only so far.
- Local SIMs trigger an IMEI registration regime, but roaming travel eSIMs are exempt; WhatsApp generally works, though a VPN is a sensible backup given occasional disruptions.
